1. Key Features
Thanks to the optical system incorporating two ED glass, a super ED glass, two fluorite lens and an SR lens elements, various aberrations including chromatic aberration are effectively compensated, delivering outstandingly sharp rendering. As a result, incredibly high resolution throughout an image is achieved consistently from the maximum aperture with effective compensation for aberrations.
The bright maximum aperture of f/2.8 expands the range of photo expression. Utilizing the large, beautiful, natural bokeh, unique to a 400mm f/2.8 lens, provides rendering with a sense of depth that makes the subject naturally stand out. The f/2.8 maximum aperture also enables the use of higher shutter speeds even in low-light situations including indoor sports scenes, delivering sharp images with minimal blur.
Newly developed Meso Amorphous Coat* that realizes the highest anti-reflection performance in NIKKOR history and ARNEO Coat are both employed. Meso Amorphous Coat provides an effect superior to that of Nano Crystal Coat for diagonal incident light, and an effect equivalent or superior to ARNEO Coat for vertical incident light. With its superb performance, ghost and flare caused by incident light from various directions are noticeably reduced, delivering clear images even under harsh conditions.
*With this coating system, amorphous particles, that are even smaller than nano particles, are utilized to create even more gaps within the coating to form an ultra-fine mesoporous structure, attaining a lower refractive index. In addition, a higher-precision base coat is employed to further enhance the anti-reflection effect.
Reliable shooting for sharp images is ensured even during super-telephoto shooting or in low-light shooting that is likely to produce blurred images caused by camera shake. The powerful optical VR function with a compensation effect equivalent to shooting at a shutter speed 5.5 stops* faster is effective even when the built-in teleconverter is used. The newly developed Silky Swift VCM is utilized for the first time in NIKKOR Z lenses as an AF drive motor. This system simultaneously achieves higher speed, higher accuracy and quieter operation. Each of these factors far surpasses the conventional systems, and as for the “quietness” specifically, drive sound is intensively suppressed to an almost-silent level. Even heavy lenses can be controlled accurately at high speed, with minimal noise or vibration, enabling users to reliably capture sharply focused images without missing shutter opportunities. Extremely quiet AF operation is specifically advantageous for shooting in places where silence is required and for video recording. By adopting the Silky Swift VCM, the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S realizes unprecedented AF performance, reliably satisfying the strong demands of many users including professionals.
Smooth and accurate movement of focusing lenses is achieved by incorporating a guide mechanism with minimal gaps between guide parts, suppressing vibration within the AF drive to the limit. This greatly contributes to enhancing the advantages of the Silky Swift VCM.
This absolute type encoder detects the lens position moved by the AF drive with remarkable accuracy. The adoption of the optical ABS encoder attains a superb specification regarding AF accuracy that is specifically required for a professional lens.
*The ABS encoder is an absolute encoder. An encoder is a measuring tool that digitally detects the amount of rotation or movement. It is used as a sensor that communicates the position and speed of a motor to the control components of industrial robots and other machinery. An absolute type recognizes its own absolute position.
Two focal lengths of 400 mm and 560 mm are covered that can be easily switched without altering the shooting posture, offering great convenience especially when instant change of angle of view is required. Thanks to the reduced need for changing lenses, the risk of dust entering the gear is minimized even in harsh environments. Also, there is no need to carry external teleconverters or several lenses, enabling users to shoot diverse scenes with much less burden. Consistent high image quality is realized with or without the teleconverter in use through optimized optical design, providing supreme confidence and stable shooting.
Despite being a lens with a built-in teleconverter, light weight equivalent to competitors’ lenses without a built-in teleconverter is achieved. This is realized with the adoption of a fluorite lens, lighter than an optical lens, as well as magnesium alloy for the body. Since its size is optimized to be airline carry-on luggage, there is no need to check it in and it can be carried with you safely at all times.
The teleconverter switch is optimally positioned so that users can operate it with a finger of the right hand while holding the camera grip. This ensures smooth switching of the focal length without interrupting shooting, allowing users to keep focusing on a specific subject while changing the angle of view.
Photographers can concentrate on shooting with confidence even under the severest conditions thanks to various advantageous features. Highly robust magnesium alloy is adopted for the lens barrel for greater reliability. Sealing on various portions including movable parts of the lens barrel and a rubber gasket around the lens mount are adopted, ensuring superior dust- and drip-resistant performance*. Fluorine coat that repels dust or dirt for easy removal is applied to the surface of the front-most element.

Since the center of gravity is located in the middle of the tripod collar (shifted further toward the camera/photographer than before), it facilitates panning on a monopod and provides more stable operation for handheld shooting.
Controls such as a built-in teleconverter switch, lens Fn buttons (1/2), memory set button, Fn ring, control ring and focus ring are operable without visual confirmation or alteration of the shooting posture. By pressing the memory set button after focus is achieved, the focus position can be stored and recalled via rotation of the Fn ring, enabling easy access to frequently used focus positions.
Superior operability has been pursued not only for still shooting but also for video recording. Outstandingly quiet AF operation that is essential for video recording is realized with a newly developed Silky Swift VCM in the AF drive system. The click-less control ring also contributes to reduction of operational sound while ensuring comfortable operation. In addition, a focus-breathing compensation function which effectively reduces shifting of the angle of view when adjusting focus is available, enabling supremely natural movie expression. Stable exposure also permits smooth and stable aperture control that delivers natural exposure changes when recording.
The security slot supports the attachment of security wires readily available on the market, reducing the risk of gear theft.
