Fast, telephoto zoom lens with superior image quality for expanded shooting opportunities.
Expand your shooting range. This fast telephoto lens has a versatile focal length of 120mm to 300mm, allowing you to capture a wide variety of stills and movies with just a single lens. Ranging from close-up portraits of an athlete to much wider shots covering the whole pitch, all you need to do is simply switch up the angle of view to adapt to these scenarios. Without having to change up lenses, you will never miss a crucial moment. The AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR also performs well in low-light situations, such as indoors, thanks to the bright maximum aperture across the entire zoom range. Lower shutter speeds can now be used in these situations to produce sharp images with minimal camera shake, giving you much more flexibility to expand your creativity.
Diversify your options with a teleconverter that can be attached to the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR. Attaching the 1.4x teleconverter increases the effective maximum aperture to f/4 and instantly expands your shooting range with minimal equipment.
The AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR provides the same exceptional quality as a prime lens. Experience a new realm of imaging quality through its highly precise chromatic aberration compensation with Nikon’s original, newly developed SR lens. Featuring characteristics that lend itself well to controlling short-wavelength light that is difficult to compensate, enjoy consistent clarity and high resolution in your images. No longer will you have to worry about incident light ruining your shots or avoiding light sources in your frame. Ghost and flare effects are greatly reduced with the combination of an ARNEO Coat and Nano Crystal Coat to realise ultra-low reflectance across the entire visible light range.
Add an artistic touch with beautiful bokeh and elaborate expression produced by the fixed aperture of f/2.8. Even for a telephoto lens, it excels in being able to get much closer to subjects with a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.16x and a minimum focus of 2m. Get right into the heart of the action and capture impossible shots.
Experience stress-free shooting and enhanced shooting mobility over extended periods of time in any environment. Meticulously designed with a photographer’s needs in mind, its lightweight and durable body of approximately 3,250g makes it easy to bring it with you on any adventure. With dust and drip-resistance and sealing in various sections, including movable parts of the lens barrel, don’t let the bad weather hold you back. The fluorine coat applied to its front lens element allows for easy cleaning of dirt or grease on the lens surface while also providing a superior anti-reflection effect, tying it all together to ensure clear and crisp visuals.
1 Based on CIPA Standard; in NORMAL mode; this value is achieved when attached to a digital SLR camera equipped with 35mm film size image sensor. Measured at maximum telephoto position.
1. Key Features
The extensive telephoto focal-length range from 120 to 300 mm* with a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 greatly changes sports shooting. With a bright maximum aperture, higher shutter speeds can be used even for indoor and dark scenes, enabling the capture of sharp images with minimal image blur caused by camera shake. Also, utilizing the elaborate bokeh effect produced with f/2.8, beautiful portraits that effectively emphasize the subject can be captured.
* When attached to a DX-format SLR, the angle of view is equivalent to that of a 180-450 mm lens in FX/35mm format.
Despite being a zoom lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR provides excellent image quality that will satisfy even professionals. The latest optical system employing one newly developed SR lens, one ED glass and two fluorite lens elements achieves resolution equivalent to that of a prime 300 mm lens. The new SR (Short-wavelength Refractive) lens greatly contributes to minimizing color bleeding due to chromatic aberration. In addition, ghost and flare effects caused by incident light are effectively reduced via the simultaneous use of ARNEO Coat and Nano Crystal Coat, enabling the capture of sharp and clear images even when a light source is located within the frame.
Nikon's original SR lens is a high- and specialized-dispersion glass lens featuring characteristics to greatly refract light with wavelengths shorter than that of blue. By controlling short-wavelength light that is difficult to compensate, light of various specific wavelengths can be more effectively collected achieving highly precise chromatic aberration compensation.
Because this lens can be used in the same way as normal glass lenses, more flexible optical design is possible without limitations in lens layout. While realizing high optical performance, a compact and light lens can be designed.
Enhanced AF servo drive control results in more accurate subject tracking based on AF detection results. Also, tracking performance even for moving subjects that radically change speed is improved with higher-speed inversion of AF drive.
The VR function of the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops* faster in NORMAL mode. SPORT mode, adopted as an option of the VR function, is particularly effective when shooting scenes in which subjects are quickly and erratically moving. Because a stable finder image can be reliably viewed even during subject tracking, the capture of images with the intended composition is enabled. This advantage also applies to movie recording.
* Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when attached to an FX-format digital SLR camera, with zoom set at the maximum telephoto position
The AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR provides operability common to Nikon's latest telephoto/super-telephoto lenses. The zoom ring, focus function buttons, tripod collar ring and controls are all designed to ensure superior operability for more comfortable shooting. By employing a fluorite lens element and magnesium alloy, a light weight of approx. 3,250 g as well as an extremely durable body are achieved. These factors provide stress-free shooting even over an extended period of time.
The lens body was designed while carefully considering dust- and drip-resistant performance for enhanced reliability. Fluorine coat, that effectively repels dust or dirt, is applied to the front lens surface to ensure high antifouling performance. These features enable photographers to continue shooting in diverse environments and conditions.
Even during high-speed continuous shooting, exposure is stably controlled with the adoption of an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism.
